A Memorial Tribute to Mr. A. W. Thompson

June 12, 1916 – July 10, 2009

Mr. A. W. Thompson was the Director Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Ruston.  We would like to tribute this article to him as we remember his numerous contributions to the banking industry in the Ruston area.

Mr. Thompson was the President of Ruston Building & Loan from 1975 to 1992 and retired after a career in the banking industry in North Louisiana.  Mr. Thompson graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1936 with a B.S. in Business.  He began his banking career with Commercial National Bank in Shreveport, and then served in the United States Army in World War II.  He returned to the banking industry after World War II and continued to serve in various capacities at First National Bank in Ruston prior to joining Ruston Building & Loan.

As Mrs. Thompson would sometimes say, “He would do the head work, and I would do the leg work!”  Mr. Thompson was married for 73 years to Mrs. Screven Williamson Thompson at the time of his passing.  Mr. Thompson was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Ruston as well as Trinity United Methodist Church.
